Permitted Number of Pets

If you wish to keep more than 2 dogs and 2 cats, or 4 different types of animals, and your land is less than or equal to half a hectare, a Local Law permit is required from Council.

Without a permit, the number of animals on one property at any time must not exceed the maximum number set out in the following table:

A permit is required to keep more that 2 dogs and 2 cats up to a maximum of 4 dogs and 4 cats.

Permit requirements - dogs

Written consent to the application is given by all abutting neighbours. Note: any (written) refusal to consent must list reasons for the refusal.

A secure run is provided with concrete floor and drainage sufficient to:

  • confine the dogs when the owner is absent from the property
  • provide exercise room for the dogs when confined
  • provide easily cleaned housing for the dogs
  • any food for the dogs can be stored either in a refrigerator or a vermin proof container (for dry food)
  • the animals are kept in clean and sanitary conditions

Permit requirements - cats

  • Written consent to the application is given by all abutting neighbours. Note: any written refusal to consent must list the reasons for the refusal.
  • A facility is provided to enable the cats to be confined to the property from 6.00 pm until 6.00 am the following morning.
