Women in local government
Council is a supporter of the Victorian Local Government Women’s Charter.
The Charter is not just about gender equity but focusses on women's diversity and their active citizenship that arises from the partnership between women and local government and women in communities.
The Charter recognises the need for increased women's participation in local government by Council supporting three key principles:
- gender equity
- diversity
- active citizenship.
Interview with women councillors
In Channel 31's A Gender Agenda, Walkley Award-winning journalist Agnes Cusack interviews three Victorian councillors about why 700 women should stand in the 27 October 2012 local government elections.
Varying in age and politics, each are adamant that an increase on the current 29% representation would be good for local government and beneficial for women themselves. Their debate is wide-ranging, perceptive, and often funny.
