R & M McGivern Art Prize

The R & M McGivern Art Prize is a prestigious acquisitive award that promotes artistic excellence in watercolour, oil and acrylic painting. It is also an opportunity for Maroondah City Council to acquire the winning artwork and continue to build a quality art collection for the Maroondah community.

The R & M McGivern Art Prize is held every three years, with the next to be in 2009.

Artists are invited to enter their original Oil, Acrylic or Watercolour work under the following prize categories:

Prize Money

R & M McGivern Art Prize (Acquisitive)   $ 10,000
Outstanding Watercolour $ 1,000
Commendable Watercolour $ 500
Outstanding Oil/Acrylic $ 1,000
Commendable Oil/Acrylic $ 500

History of the Prize

The late Muriel Evelyn McGivern died on 29 January 2000. One of the components of Muriel's will was the creation of the R & M McGivern Croydon Arts Trust, to be administered by the Trust Company of Australia Limited.

A proportion of Muriel's Estate has been invested by the Trust Company of Australia Limited for the purpose of organising an art competition every three years from the date of Mrs McGivern's death (first event was scheduled in 2003) of oil and watercolour paintings for the R & M McGivern Art Prize. The winning artwork for the major R & M McGivern Award will be an acquisition piece and remain the property of Maroondah City Council for the purpose of exhibition within the region for the benefit, education and enjoyment of the citizens of the City of Maroondah.
