Footpath Trading & Advertising

Tables and chairs on footpathA permit is required when a business conducts commercial activities on the footpath directly outside its premises.

Maroondah City Council supports footpath trading throughout shopping precincts, but requires that public safety is not compromised and that pedestrians have a continuous and uninterrupted path of travel.

Maroondah City Council’s Footpath Trading Policy details permissible trading activities on public footpaths within Maroondah’s shopping precincts. It has been developed with full reference to the statutory obligations of Council, Federal and State Government regulations.

What sort of activities does Council allow on footpaths?

You must have a Council permit before you place the following items on the footpath:

  • A-board sign displays
  • tables and chairs
  • display of goods.

The policy does not apply to:

  • advertising boards for home based businesses and real estate boards, including pointer boards, in residential streets. These signs are regulated under the Maroondah Planning Scheme
  • temporary charity events such as sausage sizzles. However, when conducting these events, the area used will be considered a trading activity zone.

How do I apply for permission to place items on the footpath?

You will need to complete a permit application form, available from the link below or by phoning 1300 88 22 33.

The application must include:

  • completed application form
  • application fee, see Fees and Charges
  • Certificate of Currency (Public Liability insurance of a minimum of $10 million) - an example is provided below
  • sketch plan of the preferred location of advertising sign, display of goods, or chairs and tables, also noting the location of trees, pit covers and other permanent fixtures.

Charity and community groups must still complete the application form but are exempt from payment of the permit fee.

If paying the renewal fee online, we cannot issue the permit until we receive a copy of your Certificate of Currency. This can be forwarded to Local Laws via:
