For many people, the Christmas and New Year period is a chance to head away with the family on a much-needed holiday.

Unfortunately, this time of year is also popular with burglars. So, before you go away it is important you protect your house and property.

There are a few simple things you can do such as telling a trusted neighbour of your movements so they can keep an eye out for any unusual activity. Also, ask if they can collect any mail and put your bins out for collection.

Programming lights to come on during the evening and asking a neighbour to park their car in your driveway are also great ways to make it appear someone is home.

You can also fill out an Absence from Residence form at your local police station so that police can keep an eye on your property.

These simple steps could be enough to deter a would-be thief. So make sure you’re prepared over these holidays, as it better to be safe, than sorry.
