Wyreena Community Arts Centre is excited to be bringing its popular Music Café live music event series back for 2018 ! The music series will kick off with seasoned international performing and recording artist Simon York on Friday 23 February.

Don’t miss your chance to hear the multi-talented Simon York, as he entertains with his diverse blend of relaxed jazz and bluesy lounge vibes with contemporary vocal rhythms.

Born near Byron Bay, York grew up in a musical household; his father played the jazz saxophone and his mother the classical piano.

A regular performer at music ‘hot spots’ around the world, York himself is a strong vocalist, as well as an accomplished and consummate pianist, keyboardist and guitarist. Among his many musical talents, it is perhaps his album Cream for the Soul where York’s ability as an arranger, singer and musician comes to the fore.

York, who now calls Maroondah home, began his career touring Australia performing punk and Indi concerts. But he stumbled upon something special when he discovered his love for jazz and how it could be merged with house rhythmic motifs. He has played, and continues to play, in some of the world’s most prestigious jazz and dance clubs, as both a resident entertainer and performer in large shows, galas and events.

It was while living in the Spanish Canary Islands for a number years performing alongside local Spanish, Brazilian and Cuban musicians that he began to experiment with Latin beats and Afro-Cubin rhythms. He took this music to Athens, Zurich, St Moritz, Latvia and other parts of Europe where it was received with rave reviews.

Simon is also a member of Maroondah Arts Collective (a collection of musicians, performers, artists, designers and creatives living and/or working in Maroondah) and has performed at ‘Live at Realm’.
