Maroondah City Council's Arts and Cultural Grants Program supports a diverse and culturally rich Maroondah through community driven projects, initiatives and events that increase arts profile and participation. These initiatives may focus on a wide variety of art forms.

Arts & Cultural Grant Program recipients

2019/2020

‘Carnifex’ by Roger Archbold

Recipients of the 2019/20 Arts and Cultural Grants Program were: 

  • Croydon Main Street Traders - $3,500
    The Chemist
    A stencil art portrait of Croydon pharmacist Jim Burns by artist Andy Drewitt. The band-aid design concept represents Jim’s role as a chemist - a healer in the community - and particularly his care for people suffering addiction.
  • Fresh Theatre for Social Change - $5,000
    Bard in the Backyard
    A site-specific performance of Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ in the Backyard.  The performance will stay true to the Shakespearian text whilst interweaving local stories of family conflict, intergenerational divide and tolerance to deliver a world that is relatable and real.
  • Maroondah - Ringwood Branch of Seniors Australia - $3,000
    Carnifex
    A public artwork which explores Croydon’s history from the Pleistocene period and depicts a marsupial lion which may have lived and hunted in the area.  Carnifex, an ambush predator, it would sneak up and leap upon its victim or drop down from an overhanging branch.
  • Nadrasca Community Options - $2,130
    Maroondah - Connecting the lines, connecting the people
    This project brings together Nadrasca and Studio4 artists for drawing and painting workshops which focus on celebrating what they enjoy about Maroondah. The artwork which evolves form the workshops will be exhibited at Maroondah Federation Estate in September 2019.
  • Ringwood Eisteddfod - $1,512
    Website project
    Assistance provided in updating their website to provide a more efficient booking system.
  • Urban Life - $2,800
    Urban Chill Nights
    An opportunity for emerging artists to perform in a warm, laid back environment to develop their craft and material. Nights will include an open mic segment and be rounded out by more experience performers. 
  • Yarrunga Community Centre - $4,000
    Look What I can do Art and Craft Program
    Provide participants with access to marketing materials with the aim of increasing confidence and communication skills with others and potentially pursue arts as a form of self-employment in the future.    

2018/2019

Croydon Conservation Society - Maroondah trees

Recipients of the 2018/19 Arts and Cultural Grants Program were:

  • Australian Dance Council - Ausdance Victoria Inc. $7,237
    Big Dance at Maroondah City now Big Dance Maroondah
    Big Dance workshops for all ages and abilities culminating in a large scale public outdoor performance. Big Dance Maroondah was filmed in Main Street, Croydon, on the lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. Maroondah City Council and Big Dance Australia acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land which this choreography and film were made. We acknowledge its elders’ past, present and our emerging leaders of tomorrow. Choreographed by Frances Rings and Craig Bary/Music by Huey Benjami.

  • Croydon Conservation Society $1,416
    Maroondah Trees
    A community art project to celebrate beautiful Maroondah trees.  To be displayed in public spaces.

  • Croydon Main Street Traders Association $4,300
    ‘Nation Walk’ Multicultural Costume Exhibition
    A project which will culminate in showcasing culturally diverse costumes in shop windows as part of the Croydon Multicultural Festival and Harmony Week 2019.

  • EACH $2,448
    Bush Tucker Project
    An early learning oral health promotion project which will include indigenous cultural approaches.

  • Yarrunga Community Centre $6,011
    Carers Acting Up
    A creative theatre project to connect carers in the community.

Recipients of the 2016/17 Arts and Cultural Grants Program were:

  • Melbourne Welsh Male Choir $3,000 
    Singer of the Year Master Class Workshop
  • Mullum Mullum Indigenous Gathering Place $2,000 
    Indigenous Artists Collective – workshops to develop artworks for exhibition at Maroondah Access Gallery.
  • Uniting Care Harrison $3,950 
    All inclusive art exhibition
  • Fresh Theatre for Social Change $5,000 
    Development + performance of Thirty Nine - 39% of homicides in Australia are a result of domestic violence.
