Community Wellbeing

Community wellbeing is about the healthy development of communities and is largely affected by the social aspects, built environment, natural environment and economic dimensions of the local area and community.

Council aims to improve health, wellbeing and quality of life in Maroondah through a number of ways, including:

  • Community Planning - Strategic planning with the community that draws on different forms of information to understand and meet community values, needs and aspirations.
  • Community Development - Enabling the community to be directly involved in making decisions about issues that affect them, and in participating in the general life of the community.

Council is involved in a number of projects and activities to maximise community wellbeing.  This page provides details on a few of these projects.

Maroondah Health, Safety and Wellbeing Plan

The Health, Safety and Wellbeing Plan (Maroondah's Municipal Public Health Plan) is a strategic document that focuses on the many factors that influence safety, health and wellbeing in Maroondah.  The document identifies the priority issues in Maroondah and the commitments of Council in working towards an optimal state of health and wellbeing for the Maroondah community.

Council recognises that a whole-of-community approach is needed to reach this goal of optimal community wellbeing, with participation and commitment from all individuals, groups and organisations that have a role in influencing the health, safety and wellbeing of the local community.  The Maroondah Partners in Health, Safety and Community Wellbeing Committee is made up of key individuals and organisations in the City of Maroondah that work in close partnership to promote health, safety and wellbeing for all within Maroondah.

The Outer Eastern Regional Sustainability Indicators Project

The City of Maroondah, the City of Knox, the Shire of Yarra Ranges and Swinburne University of Technology have formed a project team to develop a set of 'quality of life/community health' indicators for Outer Eastern Melbourne. The project has created a way to measure the community's progress towards social, environmental and economic sustainability and wellbeing.

Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities

Victoria is the first Australian state to adopt a Human Rights Charter.  The Charter is designed to enshrine certain human rights in Victorian legislation and aims to establish fairness, equal opportunity and justice for all.

Council is currently seeking clarification on the Human Rights Charter and its implications for local government and the community.

Visit the Victorian Equal Opportunity & Human Rights Commission website to find out more about the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities.
