HE Parker multi sports complex Maroondah Nets

HE Parker multi-sports complex works are now complete.

Construction at the HE Parker multi-sports complex commenced in March last year, and the works at the facility are now complete.

The facility has been formally named Maroondah Nets. The name identifies the location of the facility, as well as referencing the nets that are used by each of the sports that will use the facility in netball, volleyball, badminton and table tennis.

Maroondah Nets will be owned and managed by Council, and will join the Maroondah Leisure group of aquatic and leisure facilities. It will be home to Melbourne East Netball Association, the Ariels, and the Maroondah Volleyball Association. Schools, community and disability groups will also use the venue throughout the year.

Council appointed Co-Op Studio as the design team for the multi-sports complex.

With a total project cost of $16.5 million the design of the multisports complex (complex) used the existing footprint of the netball courts. The existing netball pavilion and ten courts were demolished, making way for the new indoor complex that enables training and competition for netball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis and wheelchair sports. The four outdoor netball courts were also built to new surface standards.

The general height of the complex is approximately 11 metres, with the existing surrounding tree canopy height ranging between 10 and 20 metres. The colour palette chosen by the architect for the complex was deliberately subtle and makes use of timber and other finishes that are sensitive to the natural landscape setting.

The existing access road and car park layout was retained, with improvements undertaken including the position of new accessible car parking spaces.

The new outdoor netball courts have spectator viewing areas and good connectivity to the facilities within the new complex.

The new complex has four indoor netball courts, a kiosk, new male and female toilets, a Changing Places' toilet facility, change facilities, officials and first aid rooms, sport association offices and three multi-purpose rooms.

Grandstand seating accommodates approximately 300 people and will be supplemented with courtside seating for an additional 360 people within the venue.

The indoor netball courts also have line marking for volleyball and badminton.

The complex will be home to Melbourne East Netball Association (MENA) as well as the Ariels, for training and competition as well as social activities.

The complex will also be home to the Croydon & Districts Volleyball Association for formal training and competition. School groups, community groups, and disability groups will also use the venue throughout the year.

Traffic and car parking

The area of car park immediately adjacent to the proposed entrance of the complex has been improved. New accessible parking spaces and parallel parking was established to create a shared zone for pedestrians and traffic, providing an easy and safe drop off and pick up area.

The trees throughout the carpark were retained.

Landscaping

The new complex was designed to sit as closely as possible over the existing netball courts to achieve the maximum retention and protection of native trees.

As part of the environmental management plan, tree protection zones were established with inspections occurring throughout the construction phase. An independent arborist monitored the management plan during construction.

Council provided significant offset planting within HE Parker reserve which included the replanting of trees, native shrubs and ground covers.

In addition to the offset planting, landscape plans provide for 13 trees, along with shrubs and grasses, to be planted around the front of the new building to complement the landscape character of the reserve.
