Proposed Karralyka redevelopment.jpg

Council is proposing a $10 million redevelopment of Karralyka that will enhance and expand the existing facility.

Karralyka is a key regional arts facility, owned and managed by Maroondah City Council.

The architecturally award-winning building was opened in April 1980 and offers facilities and services for live theatre, corporate events, social functions, wedding receptions, conventions and exhibitions.

Currently the centre can cater for functions with 20 to 500 guests and the theatre’s tiered seating can cater for 430 people. In 2016, the centre catered for more than 112,000 guests; hosted 2678 events and more than 54,500 people attended theatre performances.

Council has completed a Feasibility Study, which identified that Karralyka is operating at capacity and its infrastructure is ageing and no longer meets accessibility standards.

It was determined that the venue needed a major redevelopment to ensure it can continue to meet the needs and expectations of the community into the future.

The proposed redevelopment would include:

  • a new entrance and foyer
  • outdoor paved terraced area leading from the function rooms
  • accessibility improvements
  • an additional function room and a new video-conferencing board room, both of which will enable Karralyka to increase its offering for training and conference activity.

The many disability groups in the east that use Karralyka for functions and performances will have improved accessibility and facilities for their participants and supporters.
