The Maroondah Drug and Alcohol Policy clearly states Council's position with respect to dealing with alcohol and drug issues in our community and provides a framework for the development of the Maroondah Drug and Alcohol Plan.
Whilst Local Government has an important role to play in addressing the harms associated with drug and alcohol use, efforts need to be community wide. Local Government can have a key facilitation and coordination role in bringing together all the key stakeholders in the community. This 'partnership' approach is highlighted in the policy statements.
The Maroondah Alcohol and Drug Policy provides background information on alcohol and drug use in Maroondah and also defines the key philosophies that underpin the actual policy statements.
Importantly, the document clearly identifies the varied role of Council in minimising the negative impacts of alcohol and drug use on the local community.
It formalises Council's agreement to a harm minimisation approach to the alcohol and drug issue, and is evidence of Council's commitment to a partnership approach to addressing the concerns of the community.
The associated Drug and Alcohol Plan, developed in 2003, identifies appropriate strategies and actions advanced through a partnership approach. These strategies are categorised under three key themes: information, research and an evidence-based approach; community capacity building; and harm minimisation and community safety.
