About the exhibition

Beyond Boundaries is a multi-sensory exhibition by diverse artists whose cross-disciplinary artworks explore their relationship with the environment. Artists from Maroondah and beyond, invite the community to explore artworks, which collectively, elicit responses from all five senses.

Beyond Boundaries showcases Indigenous artists, artists who arrived here after long journeys and artists who have always called Australia home. The exhibition also includes artists who are living with disability and those who deeply challenge the fundamentally dominant perceptions of how society sees them.

Possum skin cloak

Made from brush tail possum skin, the fur cloak is hanging on a rod from the ceiling. It has possum tails hanging from the bottom of it and the length of the cloak, when worn, would be about halfway down an adult’s back.

Clap sticks

 The two clapsticks are made from wood and are long and thin, about 30cms long. They are decorated with kangaroo footprints which also include a mark made by the tail. The prints are burnt into the wood and the end of each clapstick is slightly thinner so they’re easier to hold. The clapsticks are sitting on top of a plinth.

Ostrich feathers, about 30cms long, are thin and have been bunched together at the bottom so they can be tied with twine.

Eel Trap

The eel trap is made from woven raffia and is mostly a sandy colour with one darker ring. The trap is a circular vessel and the entrance to the eel trap is the widest part that becomes thinner towards the end of the trap.

About the Mullum Mullum Indigenous Gathering Place

The Mullum Mullum Indigenous Gathering Place (MMIGP) is a community controlled Aboriginal Neighbourhood House based in the Eastern Metropolitan Region of Melbourne. 

MMIGP is committed to promoting and strengthening Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island cultural identity and provides a range of programs and activities to support its clients. 

Groups within the organisation include:

  • Mullum Mullum Indigenous Gathering Place Men’s Group
  • Mullum Mullum Indigenous Gathering Place Women’s Network
  • Mullum Mullum Indigenous Gathering Place Youth Culture Group.

About Zetta Kanta and Simon York

Saimona mūzikālais talants ir dzirdams vińa gitāras spēlē un valganajās klavieru skańās. Kā mākslinieks - mūzikis Saimons nebaidās izmantot spilgtus tońus savos izpildījumos un vińa instrumentālās improvizācijas izsauc ritmu un melodijas pārsteidzošu salējumu. Abu mākslinieku talanti ir salējušies šajā izstādē gan gobelēnos, gan video / muzikālajā klipā un łauj slatītājam iegrimt izjūtās, kas sastopamas dabā un mūsu zemapzińā.

Zetta and Simon have exhibited and performed as individual artists, both nationally and internationally. Zetta, originally from Latvia, met Simon in Europe and their partnership has taken them around the world. They now live in Melbourne. 

Zetta is an award-winning fibre artist whose tactile works, utilising raw fibres, and natural materials, highlight our need to return to nature and feel its pulse. Simon is a seasoned performer and recording artist whose languid blend of guitar and keyboard instrumentation is diverse. Unafraid of colour, his fusion of varied styles, rhythms, instrumentation, and improvisation compels and captivates. 

The pair’s individual talents, as fibre artist and musician come together to create an immersive installation of spoken word, music, video and tactile wall hangings that provoke memories from a subconscious level. Their work communicates a love of the environment and a desire for mindfulness and sustainability.

About Amanda Marx

Amanda is a poet, painter and performer. Her poetic short story ‘One Perfect Day’ was short-listed for the Ada Cambridge Biographical Prose Prize. Amanda appeared in the nationally televised ‘No To Homophobia’ campaign in 2013. Her inaugural exhibition of abstract expressionist symbolism ‘Wisdom 101’ at Gasworks Arts Park was a meditation on the philosophy, literature, art, spirituality and science of the dreams and imaginings of ‘man’s sacred fascination with man’. Amanda appears at spoken word events when the spirit moves her to get her show-off on.

About Christine Scott Vincent 

Grad Dip Arts, BFA (Hons)

Christine grew up in rural Victoria and currently lives in Tasmania. She has exhibited locally and internationally with her work being held in public and private collections both in Australia and overseas.

Christine’s current print projects are concerned with concepts of HOME; as an extension of her own creative self, familial belonging, shelter, protection, asylum, boundaries, safety from the unknown predator.

An interest in architecture and watching the construction industry as it overwhelms the urban landscape, provide the ground for her current projects which reference kit-homes of the mid-20th Century. The precast slabs used in fast construction form the rudimentary shapes that become her printing (building) blocks. These blocks print textural paper forms in various forms and patterns from which an imagined environment can be built. In a sense, she is designing her own kit-home.

A state of fear is instilled in her mass scaremongering and she is greatly disturbed by the changes in our constructed environment. Christine has observed an increase in bunker-like domestic spaces. She presents a series of concept buildings that would be most appropriate for an Orwellian estate.

Mizo Community

About Grace Van Thang

BA (Politics and International Relations)

Grace is a 26 year-old woman from Myanmar with a Mizo background who arrived in Australia on a humanitarian visa. She has just completed her Bachelor of Arts (Politics and International Relations) and hopes to continue further education, and to help refugees and asylum seekers in the future.

Grace’s arts practice includes traditional Mizo dance and fashion design. The Mizo dance costume represents traditional Mizo dance practice. Her denim jacket artwork and design present a combination of traditional and contemporary practice. These works stimulate the audience with touch and sight. Not only do they evoke senses but also, they show how art can be created with the combination of traditional and contemporary concepts.

Inspiration for her contemporary fashion design comes from the artist, Frieda Kahlo and the designer from Mizoram, India - Hannah Khiangte. She likes to incorporate images that represent the sustainable hunting and gathering practices of the ancestors in Mizoram, India and Chin State, Myanmar - woven into a contemporary design.

About Ciara Glover

BF Arts (Sculpture)
 
Born in Ireland, educated in Canada and now living in Melbourne, Ciara is an award-winning conceptual artist. Her practice includes installation, sculpture, photography and performance.
 
Ciara explores spaces and boundaries through use of everyday objects and structures, highlighting man-made materiality.  Investigating the ever-changing balance between natural and artificial worlds, and the conversations between objects, she highlights a cyclic relationship giving relevance to and personifying inanimate objects. In doing so Ciara creates a dialogue between medium and message.
 
A Day in the Garden comments on plastic consumption and man-made attachment to the humble plastic bag, which threatens our natural habitats and spaces. Playing on the idea of permanence through materiality, the heaviness of Ciara’s sculpture reveals the ironic permanence of disposable objects in our natural surrounds. The work highlights how global junk has become part of everyday experience. The over-blow motif interrupts and confronts viewers with the implications of humanity’s intervention with natural spaces.

About Vision Australia 

Vision Australia is a leading national provider of blindness and low vision services in Australia. They work in partnership with Australians who are blind or have low vision to help them achieve the possibilities they choose in life.

Vision Australia support more than 25,500 people of all ages and life stages, and circumstances. They do this through 35 Vision Australia centres in Victoria, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia and through outreach programs in the Northern Territory and Tasmania. They are a not-for-profit organisation and a major participant and partner in the international blindness community.

The Vision Australia Library has been created so people living with and without blindness and vision impairment can sit alongside each other and read with braille, text or listen via audio. Nick Gleeson’s biography ‘The Many Ways of Seeing’ and Tanya Saava’s children’s book ‘The Adventures of Kenzie Moo’ provide inspiring and delightful insights into the lives of people living with blindness and vision impairment. The Perkins Braille machine provides the opportunity for people to appreciate the process of writing braille.

Edit Magyarországon nőtt fel, mint magyar nép táncos már gyerek kora óta szorosan kötődik a magyar népművészethez. 2008-ban települt ki családjával Ausztráliába, most Victoria Államban, Lilydale-ben él. Edit magyar mézeskalácsokat készít, magyar népművészeti motívumokkal díszítve. Ugyanakkor magyar táncos is, amellyel szervesen részt vesz a magyar-ausztrál közösségben. Edit egy óriás méretű mézeskalács alkotást készített, ami a látogatókat hívogatja az alkotás látványán felül az illatával és az izével is.

Edit grew up in Hungary and, as a folk dancer, her Hungarian heritage has been very important to her since childhood. She moved to Australia in 2008 with her family and now lives in Lilydale, Victoria. Edit still performs traditional Hungarian dance and is deeply involved in the Hungarian/Australian community. She makes gingerbread featuring Hungarian decoration, bringing this traditional practice into the lives of contemporary Australians. In this work, Edit explodes her practice to create a large sculpture that tempts the audience through sight, touch, taste and smell.
