Festival highlights

Freedom of Entry

From 10am, witness the 408 Squadron and 4 Wing Australian Air Force Cadets (based in Maroondah) exercise their right to enter the City of Maroondah “with swords drawn, drums beating, bands playing and banners flying”, as part of the Maroondah Festival Freedom of Entry to the City.

A Freedom of Entry is the most honourable distinction a city may bestow on a contingent of the Australian Defence Force and is celebrated with a ceremonial parade through the city streets as an affirmation of the bond between the regiment and the citizenry.

This ceremonial event involves the Squadron marching on parade (with colours flying) from Fred Geale Oval along Norton Road on to the Festival site to a ‘Challenge Point’ in front of the Main Stage on the Croydon Athletics Track.

Here they will be ‘challenged’. Once permission to enter has been granted, the Squadron will proceed south, past Keystone Hall and back to Fred Geale Oval where they will be dismissed at approximately 11am.

Sensory Garden

Located outside the Croydon Library, this shady grassed quiet area is a place for families to take some respite from the Festival. The James N Stevens Lawn will be transformed into a beautiful ‘Sense of Self - sensory garden’ exploring a colourful hand-crafted space made from materials including recycled fabrics and yarn. The area will focus on our five senses through installations and activities including sensory puddles, a large tee pee pod, sound tree, tactile nest pod and a quiet cave by artist, Sara Catena.

Brighter Homegrown Workshop

Immerse yourself with drop in workshops and cooking demonstrations featuring raw food, preserving, pickling, cultural cooking lessons and cooking with chocolate. Take inspiration from the experts and make your own at home!
