Meals On Wheels and Centre-Based Meals

Council's Food Service provides meals support for frail older people and people with disabilities who are finding difficulty in preparing their own meals. The program is designed to assist individuals to live independently in their own homes.

The service provides freshly cooked hot midday meals.

Meals can be home delivered (Meals on Wheels), or are available at a number of Community Dining Rooms (Centre Based Meals).

Meals On Wheels

Council's Meals on Wheels service provides home delivered meals to frail older people and people with disabilities.

What does the service provide?

Volunteers deliver freshly cooked hot midday meals to homes between 11.30 am and 1.30 pm, Monday to Friday. The service provides a variety of nutritious meals which include :

  • soup
  • main course - a choice is available
  • sweet; and fresh fruit or fruit juice.
  • Special dietary needs such as diabetic, vitamised, low cholesterol and vegetarian.

Frozen meals are provided for weekends and public holidays.

Eligibility

The service is directed towards frail older residents, those with a disability, and their carers.

Assessment

Assessment for Home and Community Care services is undertaken by trained staff who are sensitive and aware of the needs of the frail aged, those with a disability, and their carers. At all times the service users right to privacy and confidentiality is maintained.

Cost of the service

Council's fees for HACC services are based on the Victorian Government's Home & Community Care (HACC) Fees Policy (1998). HACC fees are variable depending on the income levels of service users.

The cost of the service is discussed with the service user during the assessment interview.

Centre Based Meals

Meals are provided on a regular basis at a number of Community Dining Rooms within the municipality.
