Tips for your property - how to avoid illegal graffiti

Some solutions you can apply to minimise illegal graffiti on your property are:

  • Using railings or palisade fences that create an impression of openness and natural surveillance
  • Using sensor lighting as a form of natural surveillance and deterrence
  • Planting thorny creepers or other plants along walls
  • Avoiding large continuous tracts of smooth surfaces and blank walls
  • Using textured or rough surfaces
  • Painting walls and surfaces in dark colours
  • Using high density, low absorbency materials such as hard burnt bricks
  • Using anti-graffiti coatings to ensure easy removal of graffiti.
  • Community art on walls where graffiti may occur can also help to reduce the likelihood of illegal graffiti. Please ensure that any artwork that will be visible to the public is of a non-offensive nature. Local business owners and residents wishing to have community art on their property are requested to contact Council to discuss their design ideas.

Council's anti-graffiti program

Council works closely with the Department of Justice and Corections Victoria to effectively remove graffiti.  Currently, Council's Graffiti Officer works with a local diversion program and a corrections team to assist in painting out and cleaning illegal graffiti on public property in Maroondah.

In special circumstances, Council's Graffiti Officer can assist private property owners to remove and prevent illegal graffiti. Council also offers a voucher to property owners to obtain, free of charge, graffiti remover or paint for graffiti removal.

Illegal Graffiti Policy

The Maroondah Illegal Graffiti Policy has been developed with the purpose of articulating and formalising Council's position in respect to illegal graffiti, community art and associated activity in Maroondah. The Policy is intended to provide direction and guidelines for Council to work towards the reduction and prevention of illegal graffiti in Maroondah and to recognise the value of community art in enhancing a sense of place and community pride.
