Maroondah Integrated Transport Strategy

The Maroondah Integrated Transport Strategy was adopted by Council in February 2006, and aims to develop a strategic transport and accessibility plan for Maroondah that:

  • ensures that all sectors of the Maroondah community have access to a range of activities via alternative transport nodes;
  • ensures that adequate opportunities are provided for the development and use of alternative modes of transport to the private car; and
  • ensures that transport services in Maroondah are provided and developed in an integrated and sustainable manner.

The Maroondah Integrated Transport Strategy investigates the following various modes of transport, provides an overview of each, discusses the issues and then proposes future actions for the improvement of each mode.

Roads and Traffic

The emphasis of the Maroondah Integrated Transport Strategy is on alternative modes of transport to the motor car. These alternative modes include public transport, walking and cycling. Apart from the rail network, these alternative modes of transport rely on an accessible, well connected, properly maintained and safe road network.

Rail

Melbourne has an extensive and well-established radial electrified suburban rail system serving the City and surrounding suburbs. Rail services provide a regular and reliable transport system for people who wish to travel from Maroondah to the Melbourne CBD or inner Melbourne suburbs.

Bus

Bus services in Maroondah reach out into the suburbs giving all residents access to public transport.  The network provides connections to train stations, shopping centres and schools, as well as sport and recreation facilities.

Bicycle

Cycling is often overlooked as a legitimate form of transport and is often considered just as a recreational pursuit. There are significant social, economic and environmental benefits to the community in considering the bicycle as an integral part of the transport network.

Walking

Walking is the most basic form of community transport. There are health benefits in walking and increased opportunities for social interaction. Walking is an ideal mode of transport for short trips to shops, work, bus stops, school as well as a recreational activity. Nearly all transport trips start and end with walking.

Community Transport

The main objectives of community transport include improving the effectiveness of non-profit groups servicing disadvantaged residents and to help reduce the level of social isolation experienced by these members of the community.

Taxi

Taxis are an important transport mode for local journeys, particularly at night after regular bus services have ceased. Taxis are also used by shoppers, and may be combined with bus or train journeys for shopping or business visits where the traveller may make return journeys by taxi (to carry parcels or other items).
