Permitted Number of Pets

If you wish to keep more than two dogs and two cats, or four different types of animals, and your land is less than or equal to half a hectare, a Local Law permit is required from Council.

Without a permit, the number of animals on one property at any time must not exceed the maximum number set out in the following table:

More than two dogs and two cats

A permit is required to keep more than two (2) dogs and two (2) cats, up to a maximum of four (4) dogs and four cats.

Permit requirements - dogs

Written consent to the application is given by all abutting neighbours. Note: any (written) refusal to consent must list reasons for the refusal.

A secure run is provided with concrete floor and drainage sufficient to:

• confine the dogs when the owner is absent from the property
• provide exercise room for the dogs when confined
• provide easily cleaned housing for the dogs
• any food for the dogs can be stored either in a refrigerator or a vermin proof container (for dry food)
• the animals are kept in clean and sanitary conditions

Permit requirements - cats

• Written consent to the application is given by all abutting neighbours. Note: any written refusal to consent must list the reasons for the refusal.
• A facility is provided to enable the cats to be confined to the property from 6.00 pm until 6.00 am the following morning.
