Why should I compost?

Up to half of the waste that Maroondah households create is organic waste such as paper, food scraps and garden waste. By composting, we can reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Composting has many benefits for you and your garden, such as:

  • creating a rich fertiliser for your garden
  • adding important minerals, nutrients, bacteria and micro-organisms to soil
  • increasing the water retention of soil
  • making more space in your bin (you can downsize to an 80 litre garbage bin).

How can I learn more?

Learn more about composting your food waste by attending one of our free workshops. Visit our community waste education page to see details of the next workshop.

Watch Hannah Moloney from Good Life Permaculture, talk through three easy ways you can get started with composting your food waste at home.
