Severe weather events

Important health information for times of extreme heat or storms

Heatwaves, when temperatures stay really high day after day, can affect your health and even be life threatening. Storms, strong winds and flooding can also have devastating effects on our community.

Heat Health Alert system has been developed by the Department of Health to notify us of days when the weather is likely to impact on the health of the community.

Restricted and cancelled Council services

If a Heat Health Alert, or if a period of extreme storms is expected, some Council services may be altered or cancelled in an effort to encourage those at particular risk to stay home and protected from the weather.

All clients will be contacted and Council staff will make alternative arrangements.

The following services may be affected:

  • Planned Activity Group
  • Social Support
  • Maternal and child health
  • Assessment and care coordination
  • Meals on Wheels
  • Vacation Care
  • Family Day Care
  • Occasional Care
  • Immunisation sessions – to check that sessions are running on very hot days, please see our immunisation sessions page or telephone 9294 5627.

Advice on coping with extreme heat

There are ways to minimise the effects of extreme heat for you and your family.

Heatwave brochure has been produced by the Department of Health that is a guide to looking after yourself and others during hot weather.

Tips for staying cool:

  • Stay inside
  • Close curtains and blinds
  • Stay hydrated – drink plenty of water
  • Wear a hat outside – take water with you
  • Call your doctor if you feel unwell.

For more information regarding Heat Health Alerts please contact the Department of Health on 1300 761 874.

Council’s Heatwave Plan

Council has produced a Heatwave Plan that provides a framework to support a coordinated response across Maroondah when a heatwave occurs. This plan also provides guidance on how to reduce the impact extreme heat may have on health and wellbeing.

Advice on preparing for severe storms

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

  • move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
  • secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony
  • keep clear of fallen power lines
  • don't drive, ride or walk through flood water
  • keep clear of creeks and storm drains.

For further information on how to prepare for a flood or storm event please see our StormSafe page or visit the State Emergency Services web site.
