Take the Plastic Free July Challenge this year and see how much you can reduce your plastic waste by!
As part of our Waste, Litter and Resource Recovery Strategy 2020–2030, we are committed to ensuring that all Maroondah households have the tools and resources necessary to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfill.
In 2020, Plastic Free July participants collectively avoided 900 million kilograms of plastic waste that would otherwise have polluted the planet.
The Plastic Free July Challenge provides resources and ideas to help reduce single-use plastic waste every day at home, work, school and in the community.
Cr Marijke Graham of the Barngeong Ward is the Chair of the Maroondah Environment Advisory Committee and member of the Eastern Alliance for Greenhouse Action.
For Cr Graham, Plastic Free July is one of the biggest community waste events of the year.
“Plastic Free July helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution. By taking small, practical steps towards reducing plastic, we can all be part of the solution to end plastic waste once and for all.
“It’s not about being perfect or doing everything. It can be as easy as picking one single-use plastic item to avoid or swap for a reusable alternative. Many people choose to avoid the top four single-use plastics of take away coffee cups, plastic shopping bags, plastic straws and water bottles.
“Or, you might choose to ‘go for gold’ and eliminate all single-use plastics for a month.
“This could be the start of a life-changing experience for you, your family, your colleagues or your local school. So, get a group together and take on the Plastic Free July Challenge,” said Cr Graham.
