Do you think you may be collecting and saving too many things? Is clutter affecting your ability to live the life you want? Council’s successful Buried in Treasures program is beginning next month.

It is estimated that one in every 20 people worldwide live with a tendency to collect more items than they need and struggle to let them go.

Starting in May, Buried in Treasures is a 16-week, evidence-based, self-help action group for people wanting to live a life that is less cluttered.

Offering a judgement-free environment, this program is open to people living in the Maroondah, Yarra Ranges and Knox municipalities.

Co-facilitated by our Occupational Therapist in partnership with Uniting Tenancy Plus, the group is open to 12 participants, and is a safe place to explore and discuss the issues of having too much clutter at home.

Participants will learn the psychology behind collecting, with support and tips on how to declutter and stop over-acquiring items.

After completing the 16-week program, participants will be ready to make positive changes in their life.

Councillor Tasa Damante, Member of the Maroondah Community Health and Wellbeing Committee, is an advocate for programs that help residents live their healthiest life.

“Living with too much clutter can greatly impact on a person’s quality of life.

“Support groups and programs such as Buried in Treasures are extremely helpful as they assist with the management of over-collecting or difficulty in discarding items by providing tips and practical strategies to help people manage clutter,” Cr Damante said.

Evidence-based results from Buried in Treasures

A study was conducted at the end of our most recent four Buried in Treasures programs, demonstrating overwhelmingly positive results.

Of the participants surveyed:

  • 100 per cent found the program helpful
  • 100 per cent found the program made a difference in their life
  • 100 per cent would recommend the program to others challenged by having too much clutter
  • 90 per cent reported positive achievements and behaviour change after completing the program

“Programs like these change lives, and it is wonderful to see the great results and positive impact this program has had in the lives of the participants,” Cr Damante said.

Help when you need it — Living a Life Less Cluttered

Created in conjunction with Outer East Primary Care Partnership and a local MHS Network of agencies, Living a Life Less Cluttered is a free booklet that shines a light on some of the reasons behind over-collecting; reasons to begin the process of decluttering; how to create a sustainable decluttering routine; and tips to stay on track.

Living a life less cluttered participant Jeanette has transformed her life after completing the Buried in Treasures program.

“I highly recommend this group. I hope others can do the program and attend the monthly support meetings as well. It was such an invaluable experience and a unique chance to meet genuine, like-minded people who were also working on themselves to try and come to terms with and resolve issues around collecting. The time assisted me with not feeling so overwhelmed and embarrassed by my own situation.

“We learnt about many facets of collection habits from why we may collect, how to resist the temptation to gather things and how to organise our things. We also learnt strategies on how to be aware of and overcome triggers. I hope many others will be able to take up the chance to attend this great program,” she said.
