Council have completed works on the Ringwood East Place Activation Project.

Working with our project partners, Council has created an exciting new laneway park at 26 Railway Avenue, Ringwood East.

Over the past 12 months, the impacts of COVID-19 have been felt around the world. The 20-minute neighbourhood principles of creating places - where everything we need is within a 20-minute walk, bike ride or public transport journey, has never been more important.

Council has been working closely with the Ringwood East Traders Association (RETA) and Mullum Mullum Indigenous Gathering Place (MMIGP) to create a renewed sense of place in Ringwood East through new community infrastructure and an inspiring Indigenous arts project.

The project

In late 2020, Council secured $100,000 funding from the State Government, through its Neighbourhood Activity Centre Renewal Fund (Office for Suburban Development, Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions) to:

  • Build a new laneway park
  • Upgrade infrastructure such as footpaths, pedestrian crossings and garden beds
  • Develop an exciting program of arts and cultural activities
  • Attract people back to this vibrant neighbourhood activity centre.

Working collaboratively with our project partners, RETA and MMIGP, we have now created an exciting new laneway park at 26A Railway Avenue, Ringwood East.

A stunning Indigenous wall mural has been created by artists Robert Young and Simone Thomson and the footpath has been painted by members of Mullum Mullum Indigenous Gathering Place, who also painted the faces of planter boxes that now line Railway Avenue, Ringwood East.

Additional infrastructure upgrades undertaken as part of this exciting project include:

  • Painting of the length of the Railway Avenue footpath to improve the amenity and safety at the shopping centre
  • Addition of a raised pedestrian crossing at Laurence Grove
  • Upgrade of the landscaping outside the Ringwood East Bakehouse (to be completed in early September.

Project funding provided by Maroondah City Council and the Victorian Government through the Office for Suburban Development, Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions.

Dancing with Creation - 26 Railway Ave, Ringwood East

What happens when you walk in harmony and peace with those around you and the world in which we live….?

You begin to see the beauty in each other, in our land, in our sky, in our waters; in all of creation. This piece is inviting you to stand still today and to acknowledge the beauty that is in our world - Robert Young, 2021

Dancing with Creation is a series of public art works in the heart of the Ringwood East shopping centre. A small park is transformed by a painted mural, footpath and planter boxes along Railway Avenue. Realised by Gunnai/Gunditjmarra/Yorta Yorta/Wiradjuri artist Robert Young, Wurundjeri/Yorta Yorta artist Simone Thomson and artists and community from Mullum Mullum Indigenous Gathering Place, Dancing with Creation has transformed this local community site.
