Walk to School 2019

Local primary schools and their students are encouraged to walk to school during October. It's a great way to help students learn healthy habits, be fit and arrive happy and ready to learn.

Maroondah City Council, in partnership with VicHealth, is supporting primary schools to be involved in the Walk to School program, which makes walking to school easy, safe and convenient.

It’s easy for schools to participate in Walk to School 2019.

Our Walk to School Guide makes planning and organising successful Walk to School activities simple. We also contribute funding to assist with covering the costs of the activities.

Resources for schools

Use the resources below to promote your Walk to School activities:

Students can participate in Walk to School through their school. The school records how many times students walk, ride or scoot to and from school during October, using a classroom calendar. Consult the Walk to School website to find out if your child’s school is participating.

Alternatively, students can independently register directly by registering directly with VicHealth through the Walk to School website. You can then log your walks, rides and scoots.

Students can win prizes just for walking, riding or scooting to and from school. The more you walk, ride or scoot to and from school during October, it increases your chances of winning!

Participating in Walk to School takes little more than a good set of walking shoes, wearing of weather appropriate clothing and being a bit more organised in packing your bag the night before.

The Bag Tag It! competition is a great way to raise school and community awareness of Walk to School before October. The competition opens on Thursday 1 August and closes on Friday 30 August 2019.

Bay Tag It! gives students the opportunity to design the bag tag that will be handed out to every student involved in Walk to School in Maroondah.

The 2019 theme

The theme for the 2019 Bag Tag It! competition is ‘who are the people in your neighbourhood?’

People you might consider to draw are:

  • a neighbour
  • a school crossing supervisor
  • the shop keeper at a local milk bar
  • someone walking their dog
  • ·other families and friends.

The winning Bag Tag and two runners up will be awarded personalised converse sneakers with your your own artwork, valued at $150. The school with the winning design will receive $200 to spend on equipment or event that promotes healthy activity.

How to get involved

  • Photocopy enough copies of the entry form and make them easily available at the school office, class or online.
  • Promote the competition by posting supplied posters around the school, reference in the school newsletter and online (posters will be supplied directly to schools).

Use these resources to promote the Walk to School Bag Tag It! Competition at your school.
