Have you ever wondered who Cheong Park was named after?
Taking the history of one of Maroondah’s significant local public places as a starting point, Becoming Home explores connections to the Chinese-Australian community through a creative collaboration between project participants Jenny Zhuang, Fiona Wu, Jiawen Lin, Leo Ren, Lesley Lowe (nee Cheong) and Paul Cheong; and curator Tammy Wong Hulbert, contemporary artist Siying Zhou and sound artist Ai Yamamoto.
The project explores ways that Chinese-Australians have made Maroondah their home through a journey of migration and finding an ideal place to live. Becoming Home also investigates the Cheong Family which settled in Croydon in the late 19th Century and donated land for public use.
A public forum with presentations by the artists and architectural historian Natica Schmeder will take place on Saturday 5 March. More detail about the forum will be available soon.

Becoming Home: Interview with the Curator
We caught up with curator, Tammy Wong Hulbert, to discuss the exhibition’s inspiration and the artists involved in Becoming Home.
The Cheong family, Walter Burley Griffin and stories of Chinese-Australians
A forum exploring the legacy of Cheok Hong Cheong including the Croydon development designed by Walter Burley Griffin. Speakers will include Museum of Chinese Australian History CEO Mark Wang, architectural historian Natica Schmeder; and curator Dr Tammy Wong Hulbert, (RMIT) and artist Siying Zhou who created Becoming Home: Stories of Chinese-Australians in ArtSpace at Realm
