National Recycling Week 2019

This year National Recycling week will take place from 11-17 November

Planet Ark founded National Recycling week in 1996 to raise awareness of the environmental benefits of recycling.

This year Maroondah is focusing on getting recycling right. Did you know that the below items should go into your blue lidded recycling bin?

  • hard/ rigid plastics i.e. punnet containers, biscuit trays and ice cream containers
  • glass bottles and jars
  • steel cans and aerosol cans
  • aluminium cans, foil and trays
  • paper and cardboard.

Remember please keep your recycling loose! Do not tie up or put recycling into plastic bags.

The following items should not go into your blue lidded recycling bin:

  • garbage bags
  • soft/scrunchable plastic i.e. chips packets and glad wrap
  • food waste
  • clothing
  • e-waste (items with a plug, cord or battery)
  • polystyrene
  • window glass
  • tissues
  • nappies.

The golden rules of kerbside recycling

To help with the war on waste follow these golden rules of kerbside recycling.

    • Look for the label - the new Australian Recycling label will tell you which bin each piece of packaging goes in.
    • Put your recycling loose into your blue lidded recycling bin
    • Leave it out - these items cause problems at the Materials Recovery Facility: bagged recycling, soft plastics, food, crockery, nappies, clothing, window/ drink ware glass and e-waste
    • Check locally - Recycling rules can vary between councils. See information on Council's waste and rubbish services
    • Drop it off - See information on where you can take other items i.e. phones, batteries and xrays for recycling.
    • If in doubt leave it out of the recycling bin! Wish-cycling doesn’t work. Putting the wrong thing in the wrong bin can cause many issues at the Materials Recycling Facility and ruin your good recycling efforts.
    • Buy it back. Unless you’re buying packaging and products with recycled content i.e. plastic bottles and print paper, you’re not fully recycling.
