Grandfill Reserve

Grandfill Reserve is located at Webster Avenue in Croydon. The reserve occupies 1.5 ha (3.7 acres) and is a major flora sanctuary in the birdlife corridor in Croydon.

The reserve is managed with a focus on conservation of indigenous flora rather than for recreational purposes.

Over 100 indigenous plant species can be found in the reserve, three of which are significant at wider regional level, with another 16 rare and significant within Maroondah. Among those, the White Stringybark Eucalypt and the Common Bird-orchid are of particular interest.

The land is designated as a ‘Land for Wildlife’ property.

A brief history

The reserve was named after John Grandfill, an early settler in the area, who purchased the land over 115 years ago.

The site had been seriously degraded by woody weeds, namely Cedar Wattles, which had outcompeted many of the local plants.

Since being managed by a Management Committee instated by the council, extensive woody weed removal and replanting have been undertaken.

Students of Croydon West Primary school and local residents have over the years assisted in these programs.
