Drainage and stormwater

When it rains in urban areas, water runs off hard surfaces like roofs, roads, car parks, paths and driveways.

Stormwater flows through your property's private drainage system to Council's stormwater drainage system, which includes pipes, kerbs, open waterways and channels.

Council’s drains eventually join Melbourne Water’s main stormwater drainage system that carries the water to creeks, rivers and eventually Port Phillip Bay.

Private and Council drains

The point where your stormwater runs off your roof and discharges into Council’s drainage infrastructure is the point of discharge (also known as the Legal Point of Discharge).
