Council endorsed the Maroondah Extended Outdoor Dining Policy at its meeting on Monday 18 September 2023.

Mayor of Maroondah, Councillor Rob Steane OAM, said the policy will help make Maroondah’s neighbourhoods and activity centres even more enjoyable.

“Extended outdoor dining has made positive social and economic contributions to Maroondah’s neighbourhood activity centres,” Cr Steane said.

“The Maroondah Extended Outdoor Dining Policy supports thriving, liveable neighbourhoods for our community. It aims to ensure that opportunities for outdoor dining are implemented in a balanced way and also provides long-term guidance around supporting local hospitality businesses.”

Extended outdoor dining was introduced late in 2020 to support hospitality businesses in recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw density limits and restrictions placed on indoor gatherings.

Thirty-seven Maroondah businesses trialled free extended outdoor dining over a two-year period. Six businesses expressed an interest in continuing to offer these spaces after the trial.

The Maroondah Extended Outdoor Dining Policy responds to learnings and feedback throughout this trial period, considering feedback from business owners, the community and the Maroondah Business Advisory Committee.

Following overwhelming support for extended outdoor dining, the policy provides a longer-term framework for managing current and future applications.
