School and adolescent immunisations

As part of the National Immunisation Program (NIP), school students in Year 7 & 10 receive free vaccinations.

Maroondah City Council, in collaboration with schools, coordinates and administers adolescent vaccinations at schools within Maroondah to support a healthy community and ensure our adolescents are protected from vaccine preventable diseases and cancers. Adolescents up to 19 years (or 25 years for HPV) who are not attending secondary school are also eligible for these vaccinations.

If you have missed an adolescent vaccination see Missed your adolescent or school vaccination?

If you have any queries or concerns please feel free to contact the Community Health team on 03 9294 5603.

Prepare for your immunisation session

Some young people can get very concerned about having a vaccination at school. It is important to remember the importance of immunisation, and how it will provide you with a lifetime of protection against diseases.

On the day

  • Ensure you have a good breakfast.
  • Ensure clothing is worn that is suitable for the upper arm/s to be exposed.
  • Ensure you are feeling well on the day. If you are unwell you should postpone your immunisation until you are feeling better.
  • More than one injection may be given on the day – this will not increase risk of side effects.

More information

Possible side effects of vaccination

After a vaccine, you or your child may experience side effects as listed on the consent form.

If the side effects do not appear consistent with common mild side effects, it is recommended you contact your GP for medical advice.

You can report these side effects via the SAFEVIC website.

Missed your adolescent or school vaccination?

If you have missed your adolescent vaccination or the vaccinations held at school, you can book an appointment at a public immunisation session to have the missed vaccines. You may also wish to visit your GP.

The NIP eligibility age for this catch-up/missed vaccination has increased from 19 to 25 years of age. Most people who have had a single dose of HPV vaccine are now considered fully vaccinated and do not need to receive an additional dose.

Unsure if you are up to date on your vaccinations?

The Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) keeps a record of vaccinations. They receive reports from all immunisation providers in Australia.

Visit Services Australia to access your Immunisation History Statement.
