What is the Maternal and Child Health service?

Council's Maternal and Child Health (MCH) service offers families information, advice and personal support in caring for infants, babies, and children up to 4 years of age:

Your Maternal and Child Health Nurse

Maternal and Child Health nurses in Victoria must hold the following qualifications:

  • Division 1 Registered Nurse
  • Registered Midwife
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Community Child Health.

During your Maternal and Child Health appointments your nurse can advise you on parenting topics such as growth and development of your baby, infant and child feeding, sleep and settling, transitioning to parenting and community resources.

Newborn and infant feeding support

If you are experiencing difficulties with breastfeeding or bottle feeding, your MCH nurse can provide information and support. This includes support with:

  • breast milk supply concerns
  • painful feeding experiences, difficulty with establishment of breastfeeding
  • fussiness/difficulties with bottle feeds
  • referrals to other specialists as required.
