Regular maternal and child health programs

Maroondah City Council runs a number of services and information sessions to ensure the health of babies and ease the concerns of new parents. They are held regularly and are free for Maroondah residents with young children. They include breastfeeding support, First Food for Babies, baby settling and more.

  • Breastfeeding program  - Please call 9294 5777 to make a face-to-face appointment.  If you would prefer to continue with a telehealth appointment, please arrange that with your MCH nurse.
  • First Food for Babies - We’ve developed a First Food for Babies information video
  • Sleep & Settling Information sessions - Sessions commencing Wednesday 1 September. We’ve also developed a Baby Settling information video
  • First time parent groups - These groups are currently online via MS Teams. If you have not received an invitation from Maroondah Maternal and Child Health please call 9294 5777.
  • Toddler Talk sessions - A session to teach simple strategies to improve your child’s talking skills. 
  • Pram Walks - Come along and enjoy some fresh air, make new friends and have a chat to our Maternal and Child Health nurses as we walk a 2.5km loop along Tarralla Creek Trail. The walk takes approximately 45 minutes. Due to current restrictions, no pram walks are currently scheduled. 
  • Supported playgroup - Please speak to our MCH nurses regarding joining this program. 
  • Open consultation sessions - This program is postponed until further notice. 
  • Drop in appointments - Drop-in appointments have been postponed until further notice

A support service for breastfeeding mothers of babies 0-4 months of age. 

We understand that breastfeeding mothers may need a little extra help from time to time. During the program, Maternal and Child Health nurses will provide advice on a range of issues including correct attachment techniques, stimulating milk supply, understanding your baby’s needs, and gaining confidence in handling your baby.

If you live in Maroondah, please call 9294 5777 to make an appointment to see our Lactation Consultant. Thes session will be held via a phone call or video conference. See a video about the program and how to access it

Sleep and settling concerns are common issues affecting families with children aged from birth to school age. Recognising the importance of sleep for a child’s long-term development and for the wellbeing of families, the Victorian Government is making significant investments to provide additional support for Victorian families through the ‘More help for new Victorian mums and dads’ initiative.

Sleep and settling information sessions are returning in September.

Learn about your baby’s behaviour and how to establish and develop a daily routine based on feed/play/sleep. 

Our Sleep and Settling Information Sessions cover a number of topics such as:

  • Age specific development and what to expect
  • Responsive settling strategies
  • Typical sleep patterns and routines
  • Challenging sleep problems 
  • Maternal and paternal wellbeing

A session to teach simple strategies to improve your child’s talking skills. Learn communication skills expected for your child’s age, simple ways to help your child say more words, and strategies to help your child put words together. 

Suitable for 0-3 years old.

  • When: Thursdays at 12pm

Feel free to invite friends and family who would like to meet other local parents/carers. It’s a great way to keep fit, have fun and meet new people.

After the walk, grab a cool drink in the Croydon Maternal and Child Health centre’s multipurpose room.
