Being Your Best You

The Being Your Best You project aims to understand what is helpful in building the mental health, wellbeing and resilience of young people.

We asked a group of young people, aged 8-16 years, from the Eastern Region of Melbourne, what they wish adults understood about what growing up is like for them. What they told us was pretty interesting.

The videos below provide a candid snapshot on how young people experience things like social media, technology and bullying, and what actions adults can take to support and empower young people who are experiencing mental health challenges.

Thanks to the young people, along with their parents and guardians for being involved in this project.

How schools and professionals can use these resources

‘Being your best you’ means empowering young people to be the best versions of themselves. You can support young people by:

  • Listening and learning directly from young people. Watch the videos to hear from young people how services and agencies can better respond to the growing mental health challenges young people face.
  • Supporting strength-based approaches. Help young people identify and use their strengths to navigate adversity, and accept barriers to wellbeing that may be beyond their control such as stigma, misgendering, or language.
  •  Co-creating relatable wellbeing messaging. Ensure young people are involved when developing wellbeing messaging so that it is relatable and easy to engage with. Each day, young people are exposed to threats to their positive mental health and wellbeing and so appropriate supports, messaging and information about access to supports are critical.
