Local Laws

Council has the ability to create local laws in order to achieve its objectives and perform its functions under the Local Government Act 1989.

Maroondah City Council has three local laws:

  • Local Law No.11
  • Local Law No.12
  • Local Law No.13.

Local Law No.11 – General Local Law

Local Law No.11 aims to assure equitable, orderly and enjoyable use of community facilities, including roads. The law was amended to incorporate Local Law No.13, which came into effect 1 September 2016.

Local Law No.11 is in place to:

  • revoke Local Law 8 and 10 made by Council
  • provide for and assure equitable, orderly and enjoyable use of community facilities, including roads
  • protect Council property and other community assets from loss or unnecessary or avoidable damage
  • support provision by Council of a safe, clean and healthy environment in areas under its control and management
  • provide generally for the peace, order and good government of the municipal district.

Local Law No.13 – to amend Local Law No.11 regarding incinerators and burning

Local Law No.13 amends Local Law No.11 by:

  • clarifying when fires can be lit or remain alight in the open air or an incinerator
  • allowing for fires in the open air for heating purposes.
