Do you care for older people, people with a disability or people with mental illness?

Our Pathway for Carers Program is an opportunity for carers to take some time out for themselves while connecting, exercising and learning about new services and support.

Meeting in Ringwood once a month on a Tuesday and a Saturday, each walk is facilitated by a guest walker who talks about the services and programs their organisation offers to both carers and the people they care for.

The walks are suitable for all fitness levels and no bookings are required.

Chair of the Maroondah Disability Advisory Committee, Cr Kylie Spears recognises the importance of providing carers with regular and ongoing support.

“It’s essential that we help and support carers, so they can continue their important work in the community.

“Pathway for Carers Program was started to provide a space for carers to meet and learn about the different support networks and programs available to them,” Cr Spears said.

Local carer, Andrew, has been a regular walker since February 2019.

“The opportunity to take a break by walking along the Mullum Mullum Creek Trail while having a chat with other carers has been very beneficial for me as the other carers can relate first hand to the challenges of being a carer.

“I have benefitted from other carers and guest speakers sharing advice on how to better utilise Government support and gained greater awareness of programs available in the community for people with a disability as well as their carers including the Stroke a Chord Choir and Companion Card.

“I have also been able to share some of my own experiences that I have learnt along the way.

“The guest speaker talks and the question and answer sessions at the cafe after the walks have also been very informative to listen to while enjoying a piece of cake,” Andrew said.
