Kilsyth Scottish Country Dance Group Inc

Unlike Highland Dancing, Scottish Country Dancing is known as the ballroom dancing of Scotland and includes reels, jigs and the slower, graceful strathspeys.

You don’t need to be a Scot to enjoy this lively, social type of dancing that has been popular in Scotland for centuries, and is now practiced throughout the world by people of all races and nationalities.

Scottish Country Dancing (SCD) is:

  • suitable for men, women and children of all ages.
  • mainly danced socially, for pure pleasure, and exercise - both physical & mental!
  • usually done in groups (called sets) with typically 3, 4, or 5 couples arranged either in two lines (men facing ladies) or in a square, working together to dance a sequence of formations. This does not mean that you need to come with a partner - many singles dance Scottish.
  • should not be confused with Highland dances like the Fling, which is a solo dance for competition or display.
