What is the Norwood Reserve enhancement plan?

The draft enhancement plans for Norwood Reserve were endorsed by Council in March 2023, with staged works and improvements currently underway. You can view the enhancement plan and read more on Council’s Your Say webpage.

The enhancement plans were developed based on feedback from key stakeholders and members of the community, to help ensure Norwood Reserve meets the needs of our community now and into the future.

Works are also underway at the North Ringwood Senior Citizen Club but are not associated with this enhancement plan. Find out more about the North Ringwood Senior Citizens Club extension works.

Works planned and underway

As part of Council’s 24/25 Open Space Capital Improvement program, Council is undertaking enhancement works at Norwood Reserve.

This includes the renewal of ageing assets, enhancing the natural features of the reserve, and creating a more accessible space for all users.

The works include:

  • Flexible open space,
  • Re-vegetation of the reserve including planting canopy trees, understorey (shrubs and bushes) and avenue trees,
  • Nature play elements,
  • Seating areas,
  • Loop walking trail.

Landscaping works are proposed to commence in June 2025, subject to weather conditions and contractor availability.

Trees and vegetation

Tree planting works will commence in October 2025, where soil works are complete, with further tree planting to take place later in 2025 once further ground works are complete. Planting of smaller bushes and shrubs will commence in 2026, more information on timing will be provided soon.

Previous planting updates

Tree planting and revegetation works at the front of the reserve were completed in early 2025.

A single avenue planting of Eucalyptus melliodora (Yellow Box) was chosen to line the Warrandyte Road boundary. These trees will be interplanted with Allocasuarina littoralis (Black) and Acacia implexa (Lightwood). These tree species are indigenous to the area and will provide a native food source and habitat for birds and wildlife, including the local Black Cockatoo population.

Drainage

Drainage improvement works are now complete.

The works include the expansion of the retarding basin at the north east corner of the site, to aid in managing stormwater storage during intense rainfall events.

Hard landscaping

Hard landscaping works are complete, which include new pathways, drinking fountain, rock step embankment and yarning circle. Outdoor furniture is on order and will be installed in October 2025. Surrounding planting will complement the hard landscaping works. Planting is due to take place in late 2025.

Building

No building works are included in the scope of the enhancement plan.

Car parking

Carpark improvement works are close to completion. Works will occur in stages through to June 2025, subject to weather conditions. Staged car park closures will apply for the duration of works to ensure accessibility to parking for building users.

The works will increase the current number of car spaces from 58 (including 3 accessible spaces) to 79 spaces (including 6 accessible spaces), adding an additional 21 car spaces to the precinct.

Surrounding pathway works will also be completed to improve accessibility to the community buildings.
