Maroondah Celebrates Reconciliation
Every year, Maroondah City Council celebrates Reconciliation Week between 27 May and 3 June.
These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the Reconciliation journey — the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.
Event
- Date: Friday 2 June
- Time: 10am to 12noon
- Venue: Ringwood Town Square (or Realm if poor weather)
In 2023, Maroondah is celebrating with performances by proud Mutti Mutti man, award-winning singer/songwriter Kutcha Edwards, the Eastwood Primary School Choir and singing group Yeng Gali Mullum who will launch their new CD ‘Cultural Synergy’ on the day.
The event will start with a Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country. Kutcha Edwards has a long history of connection with Maroondah and we are delighted that he is available to perform.
The event will also launch two arts projects:
- “From our Elders”, a video installation project created by Daen Sansbury-Smith in ArtSpace at Realm. Daen has interviewed a number of Elders connected with Mullum Mullum Indigenous Gathering Place (MMIGP) and from Tasmania and South Australia.
- Artwork on the Realm windows by MMIGP artist Amanda Wright featuring paintings of local Elders Aunty Irene Norman and Aunty Daphne Milward.
Please RSVP to arts@maroondah.vic.gov.au for catering purposes. There will be a light morning tea at the event
This event has been developed by Mullum Mullum Indigenous Gathering Place, Maroondah Movement for Reconciliation and Maroondah City Council.
