Selection process

Our selection process is designed to find the best person for the role.

Note: unsuccessful candidates not shortlisted or interviewed are notified in writing at each stage of the selection process.

1. Shortlisting

Shortlisting takes place after the closing date for applications. It involves selecting the candidates who most competitively meet the selection criteria. These candidates will be given the opportunity of an interview.

2. Interview

The interview panel follows a structured process, asking all candidates the same questions. However, they may follow up or explore particular issues with candidates. The questions are designed to gather information on how well you meet the selection criteria.

You may be asked behavioural or situational questions. Your answers should accurately reflect your knowledge, skills and abilities.

  • Behavioural questions ask for examples of how you have handled certain situations in the past.
  • Situational questions focus on how you would handle a particular situation or aspect of the position.

3. Post interview

The selection panel will assess your performance against the selection criteria and against the performance of the other candidates. There may be other selection tools used during this process, such as providing examples of previous work or participating in a test or structured exercise.

4. Reference checks

Referees will be contacted after interviews. Your current or most recent employer or supervisor will most likely be contacted (with your permission).

You will be asked to nominate at least two referees who can support your claims regarding your skills, knowledge and abilities in relation to the selection criteria. Please ensure you obtain your referees' permission before nominating them. It is a good idea to give them a copy of your application and the selection criteria to prepare them in the event they are contacted.

5. Pre-employment checks

Council conducts pre-employment checks such as medicals, police checks and working with children checks (where applicable to the requirements of the position).

6. Notification of appointment

The candidate who best demonstrates to the selection panel the highest level of merit overall will be awarded the position. The successful candidate will be notified as soon as possible after the selection panel reaches its decision.
