Tips for staying cool

Staying cool during hot weather is one of the best ways to protect your health and wellbeing.

Use the tips below to help reduce your risk of heat-related illness and stay comfortable when temperatures rise.

Prepare for summer

  • clean air conditioner filters
  • ensure ceiling fans are in summer mode
  • use plants and vegetation to shade windows
  • fill gaps in floors, walls, windows or ceilings that allow hot air in and cool air out
  • prepare an emergency kit to plan for power outages or other emergencies
  • talk to your doctor if you take medications or have a chronic medical condition that may be impacted by extreme heat
  • consider installing ceiling, wall or underfloor insulation

Prepare for hot days

  • watch out for Heat Health Warning through the BOM and Vic Emergency apps
  • close curtains, windows and doors before the temperature heats up
  • shade windows using exterior blinds or DIY shade sails
  • put a few bottles of water in the fridge

On hot days

  • keep yourself cool by spending time in air conditioned buildings or use fans and/or wet towels
  • drink plenty of water – if you need to go out, you can find your closest drinking station at choosetap.com.au/tap-finder
  • set air conditioner set points to 24-26 degrees
  • avoid the sun during the hottest parts of the day and avoid heavy activity and exercise
  • wear loose fitting, light coloured clothes made from natural fibres, such as linen and cotton
  • take cool showers or foot baths
  • check in on elderly or vulnerable friends, family and neighbours
  • avoid using your oven or cooktop
  • look after your pets and local wildlife by providing access to cool water and shade
  • visit one of our many locations across Maroondah to cool down. Contact venues for opening hours.
  • after the cool change, turn off air conditioners, turn on fans, and open doors and windows as soon as the temperature outside is cooler than inside

If the power goes out

  • if you need to charge your devices or wifi access, visit Realm or Croydon Library during opening hours. Visit Council’s social media channels for up to date information
  • remember power outages can affect food in your fridge and freezer. Visit VicHealth and Better Health Channel websites for tips on staying safe
