National environmental events

February and March

  • The Great Aussie Fungi Quest - The Great Aussie FungiQuest is the largest fungi mapping bioblitz in Australia’s history. Join fellow Australians - including some of Australia’s top mycologists - in getting outdoors and photographing all the fungi you can find. An adventure for all ages and experience levels.
  • Australasian Bat Night -  A fantastic community event where we debunk the myths and fears associated with bats, and demonstrate how better conservation measures can not only help protect our native bats but also assist people to live alongside our nocturnal neighbours! 
  • Clean Up Australia Day - Sunday 5 March. Clean Up Australia inspires and empowers communities to clean up, fix up and conserve our environment. More than 20 million Aussies have participated in Clean Up Australia activities and events over the past three decades.

    • If you can’t make the date of the national event, you can register to get involved any day of the year! Clean Up Australia Day will provide you helpful resources including a Clean Up kit 

July

  • Schools Tree Day & National Tree Day - Each year, around 300,000 people volunteer their time to engage in environmental activities that educate Australians about the world around them. While every day can be Tree Day, we dedicate celebration of Schools Tree Day and National Tree Day to the last Friday and last Sunday in July.

August

  • National Science Week - National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. Running each year in August, it features more than 1000 events around Australia, including those delivered by universities, schools, research institutions, libraries, museums and science centres.

September

  • Threatened Species Bakeoff - The Threatened Species Bake Off is an invitation to Australians to bake a dessert in the shape of a threatened species. The Bake Off aims to build awareness in the community about Australia’s remarkable and unique threatened wildlife.

October

  • Aussie Bird Count - The Aussie Bird Count is an activity for all-ages that involves observing and counting the birds that live near you – whether that’s in your garden, the local park, a beach or even your town centre. By telling us about the birds you’ve seen within a 20 minute period, you will help BirdLife Australia develop an understanding of local birds whilst getting to know the wildlife on your doorstep! 
  • Great Southern Bioblitz - The Great Southern Bioblitz is part of a global movement to encourage everyday people to practice citizen science all whilst enjoying their nearby natural areas. Maroondah City Council is encouraging you to participate in the Bioblitz by heading outside into your local areas to capture the range of biodiversity you can find during the southern hemisphere spring.

November

  • Frog ID Week - FrogID Week is Australia’s Biggest Frog Count, held annually for Australians to help record frog calls through the free FrogID app, as a measurement of frog health and distribution around the nation. It aims to monitor frog distributions over time, helping us to understand how frogs and their ecosystems are responding to a changing planet.
  • Australian Pollinator Week - Australian Pollinator Week acknowledges our important and unique insect pollinators during our southern spring (November). It is a designated week when communities, businesses and organisations can come together to raise awareness of the importance of pollinators and support their needs.

International environmental events

February

  • World Wetlands Day - 2 February 2023. World Wetlands Day is celebrated each year on 2 February to raise awareness about wetlands. This day also marks the anniversary of the Convention on Wetlands, which was adopted as an international treaty in 1971.

June

  • World Environment Day - World Environment Day on 5 June is the biggest international day for the environment. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and held annually since 1973, the event has grown to be the largest global platform for environmental outreach, with millions of people from across the world engaging to protect the planet.
