In 2021, after nearly five years of advocacy by Council, the Victorian Government announced funding to remove the last three level crossings in Maroondah. Before this announcement, Council advocated for the projects by developing and presenting concept plans similar to those delivered today, and by carrying out extensive community consultation in 2017 and 2018.
Feedback from the community, especially on the Croydon level crossing removal plans, played an important role in showing that the projects were not only needed, but also strongly supported by local residents.
During the detailed design and development stage, Council used its local knowledge and insights from earlier consultation to continue providing design advice to the Victorian Government. This helped ensure the projects delivered the best possible outcomes for the community.
Council’s advocacy led to important improvements in the final plans, including new roads, shared walking and cycling paths, safer pedestrian connections, more landscaping and open space, and other urban design enhancements. These improvements have now been delivered as part of the three level crossing removal projects.
