In accordance with Councils ongoing commitment to reduce the impacts of stormwater flooding on the community, flood mitigation construction works are planned to improve the collection and movement of stormwater within San Remo Road and Through Road in Ringwood North.
Large 1200mm diameter stormwater pipes (and associated collection pits) will be installed along the length of San Remo Road between Evelyn Road Reserve and Through Road, connecting into the existing drainage system outside 17 Through Road.
This major pipeline will divert stormwater away from the existing low point outside 17 Through Road and reduce pressure on the existing easement drain that runs within properties 2A to 8 San Remo Road.
The roadway between 19 Through Road and 8 San Remo Road will be altered to remove the existing low point outside 17 Through Road and improve the gradient along the remainder of the road.
Once completed, the road will have continuous fall from 19 Through Road to Evelyn Road Reserve and will encourage overland stormwater flow (during major rainfall events) to follow the roadway instead of the existing overland flow path within residential properties.
A footpath connection from Evelyn Road Reserve to John Street will be constructed along San Remo Road, Through Road and Unsworth Road (refer to concept plan attached). While providing an off-road accessible pathway connection, the footpath will also act as a flood level control to contain flood water within the roadway during major storm events. These segments of new footpath align with Council’s Principal Pedestrian Network (PPN) and strategy for new footpath construction within the municipality.
Two raised pedestrian crossings will be constructed at the San Remo Road and Cameron Road intersection, and at the Unsworth Road and John Street intersection. While providing safe crossing for pedestrians and encouraging lower speeds at the intersections, the raised pedestrian crossing will also act as a flood level control to contain and direct flood water along the overland flow path.
The retarding basin expansion at nearby Norwood Reserve will store a greater volume of flood water during high intensity rainfall events and reduce pressure on the downstream drainage network. Find out more about these recently completed Norwood Reserve enhancement plan.
