Why should I compost?

Up to half of the rubbish that Maroondah households create is organic waste such as paper, food scraps and garden waste. By composting, we can reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Composting has many benefits for you and your garden, such as:

  • creating a rich fertiliser for your garden
  • adding important minerals, nutrients, bacteria and micro-organisms to soil
  • increasing the water retention of soil
  • making more space in your bin (you can downsize to an 80 litre garbage bin).

How can I learn more?

Learn more about composting your food waste by attending one of our free workshops. Visit our school and community waste education page to see details of the next workshop.

In the mean time, you can watch Hannah Moloney from Good Life Permaculture, talk through three easy ways you can get started with composting your food waste at home.

Good Life Permaculture is based on muwinina country, lutruwita (Hobart, Tasmania) at the bottom of Australia. Good Life Permaculture are a permaculture landscape design and education enterprise that creates resilient and regenerative lives and landscapes.

Hannah has two decades of hands-on experience in designing, building, managing and doing projects around urban agriculture, small-scale farming, permaculture and community development – all towards building climate resilience.
