Maroondah's housing target
The State Government has defined housing targets for each municipality in the state. Councils will need to use a yet-to-be-released government portal to verify that current planning controls allow enough space for development to ensure that this housing can be provided.
The targets represent the theoretical number of dwellings which could reasonably be constructed by 2051, rather than the number actually constructed or the total capacity of the municipality.
The Maroondah target is for an additional 39,500 homes by 2051. By comparison, at the 2021 Census there were approximately 44,000 dwellings in Maroondah.
Council’s Housing Strategy outlines Council’s intent that housing growth is to be concentrated in and around key activity centres, with less development in sensitive areas. It also seeks a greater diversity of housing stock, including affordable housing. Council will continue to pursue these principles when exploring Maroondah’s capacity and any changes to planning controls.
