Waste collection trucks have a mechanical lifting arm, so bins need to be positioned to ensure the mechanical arm can reach and lift. Please follow these instructions to ensure your waste can be collected.

1. Put bin out by 6am

Bins should be on the kerb by 6am on the day of collection (or the night before).

2. Do not overfill bin

Do not overfill your bin, as this can lead to spillage and litter problems. Please keep all bin lids closed.

Keep your bin under 40kg or it may not be collected. How will you know? It will be very difficult to move.

3. Keep waste inside bin

Do not place any excess waste on top of or beside your bin.

4. Wheels away from road

Place your bins near the kerb or roadside with the wheels away from the road, nearest to the house or property.

5. Give your bin space

Do not place bins in front of one another.

Do not place bins in front of each other

Place your bin 30cm (about 1 foot) away from additional bins to allow space for the mechanical arm to access each bin.

Place your bins at least 1m away from trees, parked cars and all poles, such as light poles or electrical poles. This space is needed for safety reasons.

Keep proper space between bins

6. Keep bins out of truck turning zone

Place bins outside the truck turning zone – this applies to dead end streets and courts. If you are able to, please group bins by lid colour.

7. Multi unit developments

If you live in a multi-unit development, please help our collection drivers by grouping your bins by lid colour, remembering to leave at least 30cm between each bin to allow space for the mechanical arm of the truck to access each bin.

8. Remove bin from kerb

Please remove bin from kerb within one day of collection.

Support with your bin collection

*Missed collection must be reported within 2 business days of regular scheduled collection.

Pay less for waste collection

There are two size options for your general waste bins:

  • 120 litre
  • 80 litre

A discount applies to the 80 litre bin, and it is perfect for waste wise households, singles, couples or small families. See fees and charges

Call Council on 1300 88 22 33 to change the size of your general waste bin.

Dual occupancies, units and flats

Some multi-dwelling developments have a 'share' system for their mixed recycling and food and garden organics bins due to storage and bin placement issues. This is determined on an individual basis by our Waste Management Unit.

How to fill your bin

  • Please ensure your waste is wrapped or bagged securely. Loose waste can stick to the walls of your bin and spill when tipped. Unsecured waste can blow into drains and into our waterways.
  • Do not overfill your bin (the lid must close completely)
  • Keep your bin under 40kg or it may not be collected. How will you know? It will be very difficult to move.

Tips to safely secure your household waste while reducing your use of plastic garbage bags:

  • reuse plastic packaging such as bread bags, frozen fruit and vegetable bags, and rice and pasta packaging
  • reuse paper bags, boxes and newspaper to wrap waste
  • use compostable and biodegradable bag alternatives.

General waste bin lids are changing to red

Since November 2021 Council has been changing the green general waste bin lids to red. The bin lid colour changeover will bring Maroondah in line with the Australian standard bin lid colours and will mark the start of the changeover of all our bin lid colours to meet Australian Standards. This change is happening to meet the requirements of the Victorian Government’s Recycling Victoria Policy, released in February 2020, which outlines that all Councils will need to standardise their bin lids by 2030.

The changeover of the general waste bin lids will happen progressively and will occur:

  1. at the start of a new service
  2. when a replacement bin is required in the case that a bin has been damaged and is not able to be repaired
  3. when a bin is lost or stolen
  4. where a lid needs to be fully replaced. Please note, we can sometimes repair a lid rather than replace

Please note: to reduce plastic waste, we will not be replacing bins or bins lids that are in good condition.

Standard bin colours help to promote the correct use of general waste, recycling and organics kerbside bin collection services and supports consistent education and messaging around the use of kerbside bins across Victoria.
