Environmental Sustainability

Water way with rocks and drain

In 2016 Council published its Sustainability Strategy 2016 to 2020: Working towards a clean, green and sustainable community. The Strategy was developed in collaboration with the Maroondah Environment Advisory Committee.

The Strategy embraces the following definition of sustainability:

Sustainability means balancing economic, social and environmental factors. It is concerned with how we can manage resources to ensure future generations have the same opportunities that we enjoy today (Source: Resilient Melbourne Strategy 2016).

The strategy aims are to:

  • further embed sustainability in Councils service delivery to the community and continue to lead by example
  • build on and promote the sustainability efforts of many Maroondah residents and organisations
  • pursue partnerships to advance sustainability
  • help the community to lead a more sustainable lifestyle.

To deliver these aims, Council will focus on five areas:

  • Climate change, energy efficiency, and transport
  • Green assets and water
  • Engagement, partnerships, and communication
  • Governance, evaluation, and improvement
  • Funding, resourcing, and opportunities.

In light of the many challenges we face to our wellbeing and liveability, the Strategy’s main focus is on mainstream sustainability principles, and requires embedding sustainability into everything that we do.
