Daily FOGO habits making a tonne of difference

Maroondah’s Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) service is helping to turn truckloads of food and garden organic waste into quality compost, all thanks to your daily FOGO habits.
Between May 2023 and January 2024, the first nine months of the service, Maroondah residents collected an average of 200 additional tonnes of organic waste in their FOGO bins each month.
In that same period, the FOGO service collected 1,640 tonnes more organic waste, or the equivalent of 205 additional truck loads, when compared to the same time in 2022.
The amount of organic waste going to landfill went down as well. In those same nine months, 1,530 tonnes (97 garbage trucks’ worth) of waste did not go to landfill.
Mayor of Maroondah, Councillor Kylie Spears, thanked residents for their efforts.

“The small actions we are all making at home are making a big difference for our environment and contributing to the success of the FOGO service,” Cr Spears said.
“I encourage you to continue using the service regularly and correctly.”
Need more FOGO kitchen caddy liners?
An annual supply of FOGO kitchen caddy liners is being delivered from Wednesday 13 March to Wednesday 17 April to Maroondah households that didn’t previously decline to receive them. Each household will receive a roll of 150 liners, so keep an eye on your letterbox.
If you run out of liners before then, you can collect a top-up pack from Council’s Realm and Croydon Customer Service Centres for free.
Contact Council’s Customer Service team if you have not received your liners by Thursday 18 April or if you no longer want to receive your annual supply from next year.
