Green, sustainable, inclusive, connected and safe – these are some of the words being used by the community to describe their vision for the future of Maroondah.

In the second half of 2023, the Maroondah community was involved in sharing their aspirations and ideas to shape the future of the municipality where they live, work, play, study, or visit.

By participating in various engagement opportunities, the community has made a significant contribution to development of the new Maroondah 2050 Community Vision.

The extensive community engagement process included online and hard copy surveys, as well as more than 30 face-to-face engagement sessions held at Council events and other locations across Maroondah.

Workshops were also held with Council’s seven advisory committees, along with targeted workshops with young people, culturally and linguistically diverse community leaders, and over 80 community and business leaders from across Maroondah.

Mayor of Maroondah, Councillor Kylie Spears, thanked the community for taking part in the engagement process.

“Thank you to everyone who shared ideas and feedback as part of Council’s consultation on Maroondah 2050. Whether you completed our survey, took part in interactive activities at pop-up events or shared your ideas at onsite consultations, your feedback matters and will help shape the future of our City,” Cr Spears said.

Some of the aspects that the community values most about Maroondah include:

  • the natural environment, particularly Maroondah’s leafy greenness, flora and fauna, tree canopies, parks and green spaces
  • the proximity and accessibility of Maroondah, including the City’s location within greater Melbourne
  • the ease of access to local services, community facilities, shopping precincts and transport options
  • the character of local neighbourhoods
  • community connection and inclusion
  • the range of community services, activities, programs and events
  • the sense of space, safety and peacefulness.

“I love the closeness of facilities like the pools, library, train station, bike tracks and parks, and the ability to drive into the countryside without driving through too much traffic,” a Croydon resident said during the consultation period.

“Maroondah is clean, green and wonderfully located within greater Melbourne,” said a Bayswater North resident.

Next steps

The engagement process is continuing in 2024, with further targeted engagement to ensure that feedback captured is representative of the entire Maroondah community.

The Maroondah 2050 Community Panel has also been formed to partner with Council in developing the Vision. The Panel includes a diverse and representative group of community members that was selected from a public expression of interest process.

The Panel will work in partnership with Council to draft the Maroondah 2050 Community Vision and provide input to the next Council Plan, Asset Plan and Financial Plan over a series of workshops.
