Supporting children and families of refugee background in early years

This online workshop, facilitated by Foundation House, will enable participants to further their understanding of traumatic refugee experiences and the impact these have on how children and families engage with early years services.

Participants will consider strategies to work with families of a refugee background in early years settings that support their recovery and participation.

Topics covered will include:

  • the legal definition of a refugee and asylum seeker
  • global and local data around Humanitarian program resettlement in Melbourne’s Eastern region
  • impact of trauma on children’s development and wellbeing
  • an exploration of common elements of the refugee experience
  • role of early childhood programs and services in supporting recovery from trauma; and
  • practical examples, strategies and resources to support your work.

  • This workshop is suitable for professionals from a variety of early years programs and services including educators, teachers, bicultural educators, health professionals and nurses who work in early years settings, such as Children & Family Services, Kindergartens, Maternal and Child Health, Child Care, Library and Supported Playgroups.

About the facilitator

The Foundation House Early Years Program is supported by the Victorian Government to build the capacity of early years educators and professionals in: understanding the impact of traumatic refugee experiences; developing strategies to deliver inclusive services; and, to increase the capacity of newly arrived communities to support children and families from refugee background to engage with early years services.
