Affirmative Consent and You

Next date: Tuesday, 21 May 2024 | 07:15 PM to 08:30 PM

Chanel Contos

Join a free informative webinar about what is involved in consenting and new changes to the law.

Everyone has a responsibility to gain sexual consent. Learn how young and old alike can protect themselves and show respect to their sexual partners. Parents can learn strategies to pass on to their children when the time is right.

In a world where conversations about consent can sometimes be met with discomfort or resistance, this event aims to spark open dialogue and promote understanding.

This webinar will feature a panel of local experts. We will hear from Chanel Contos, the Executive Director of Teach Us Consent, an organisation providing holistic consent education to the public and advocacy for structural reform to prevent normalised sexual violence. We will also hear from Amy Brennan, Senior Public Defender at Victorian Legal Aid and Rebecca O’Donnell, Senior Counsellor/Advocate at ECASA.

What is Affirmative Consent?

Recent changes to Victorian law about what is involved in consenting to sexual relationships have been introduced - Affirmative Consent.

Affirmative Consent means if someone wants to engage in a sexual act with another person, they must actively gain consent, rather than rely on the other person to give their consent. These changes are to ensure the burden of consent is the responsibility of the alleged perpetrator not the alleged victim survivor.

However, affirmative consent is more than just a legal term; it's a fundamental principle that embodies the values of respect, communication, and empowerment.
